A Prius red triangle warning is Toyota’s master warning light. It means the car’s computer has logged a fault and wants you to look at the other lights and messages on the dash. On its own, it doesn’t tell you what’s wrong. At SD Hybrids, our San Diego shop on Morena Blvd, we read the code and tell you exactly what it means and what the fix costs.
Here’s how to read the warning, when to pull over, and what the most common causes cost to fix.
What the Prius Red Triangle Actually Means
The red triangle with an exclamation point is a catch-all. It lights up alongside a more specific message, and that second message is the one that matters. On most Priuses you’ll see it with “Check Hybrid System,” a check engine light, a brake warning or a battery icon.
Think of the triangle as the car clearing its throat. It’s saying “something needs attention,” and the other warnings tell you what. Snap a photo of the whole dash before you shut the car off. Some messages clear on restart, and that photo helps us diagnose faster.
Pull Over or Keep Driving?
It depends on what comes with it. If the car loses power, shows a turtle symbol (reduced power mode), or the temperature gauge climbs, pull over somewhere safe. Driving a Prius in limp mode on the freeway is how a $475 repair turns into a tow.
If the triangle comes on with “Check Hybrid System” but the car drives normally, you can usually get it to a shop the same day. Don’t wait a week. A weak battery module or a failing inverter water pump gets worse with every mile, and heat makes it worse faster.
The Most Common Causes and What They Cost
After more than 5,000 hybrids, we see the same handful of causes over and over. Here’s what they are and what we charge:
- Weak hybrid battery modules: replacement starts at $2,489 with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty
- Inverter water pump: $475 with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. A dead pump lets the inverter overheat, so this one is urgent
- Coolant control valve: $550 with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty
- Brake actuator: $2,600 for a 2004–2009 Prius (new OEM part), or $1,750 to $2,600 for the brake master cylinder and/or booster on a 2010–2015 Prius, depending on codes and VIN
- Inverter faults: Prius inverter repair is quoted after diagnosis
Every one of those prices is posted on our Prius repair price list, so you know the number before you call.

P0A80 Prius: The Battery Code Behind Most Red Triangles
A P0A80 Prius code reads “Replace Hybrid Battery Pack.” The computer has found that one or more battery modules have dropped below the rest. The pack is out of balance, and the car protects itself by throwing the warning.
It doesn’t always mean you need the most expensive fix on day one. It does mean the battery needs attention soon.
The U.S. Department of Energy lists heat generation at high temperatures as a main challenge for nickel-metal hydride batteries, the type in most older Priuses. Summer heat in inland San Diego speeds that wear up.
Our hybrid battery services page lists every price and warranty, and our breakdown of Prius battery replacement cost in San Diego walks through what the price includes and how it compares to the dealer.
Check for Open Recalls First
Before you pay for anything, take two minutes and run your VIN. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup tells you if your car has an unrepaired safety recall. Recall repairs are done free at a dealer.
Toyota has issued recalls on Prius hybrid components over the years, so it’s worth the check. If a recall covers your problem, use it. If not, a published-price independent shop will usually save you money. A newer hybrid may also still be under factory coverage; Toyota’s warranty page lists 10 years or 150,000 miles on the hybrid battery for 2020 and newer models.
What Happens at Your Code Scan
Drive in or schedule an appointment. We plug in Toyota Techstream and other dealer-level tools, pull every stored code, and check the battery block voltages, not just the headline code.
Then we tell you three things: what’s wrong, what it costs, and whether it’s worth fixing. If the car has bigger problems than the repair is worth, we’ll say so. Want a price before you come in? Request a Quote with your year, mileage and a photo of the dash.
The same straight answers go to EV drivers, too. Here’s what we can do for Tesla owners who need independent repair.
How to Keep the Red Triangle From Coming Back
Most repeat warnings come from heat and neglect. Keep the hybrid battery cooling vent near the rear seat clear of pet hair, bags and dust, because a starved battery fan cooks modules. Change the inverter coolant on schedule, and park in the shade when you can.
Routine maintenance is the cheapest way to make a battery and inverter last. If your Prius red triangle warning keeps returning after a code clear, that’s the car telling you the fault is real. Book a scan before it turns into limp mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clear the Prius red triangle myself?
You can clear the code with a scan tool, but the fault that set it is still there. It will come back, usually at a worse moment. Get the cause diagnosed first.
What does “Check Hybrid System” mean with the red triangle?
It means the fault is in the hybrid system: the battery, the inverter, its cooling system or a related sensor. A code scan narrows it down in minutes.
Is a hybrid battery warning light always the battery?
No. Cooling problems, a failing inverter water pump and even a weak 12V battery can set warnings. That’s why we read the codes before quoting a battery.
How much does the diagnosis cost?
At our San Diego shop, you get the price for the repair before any work starts.
